Once upon a time, there were two friends who were neighbors. They were also mothers of friends and neighbors. So the two families 'grew up' together. Then the two Mothers started a business called Yo Mamma. It is a business that helps people get things done around the home. They help to garden, clean, cook, paint, haul junk, move furniture, repair things, and keep things running smoothly. Then the two friends decided to start another branch of that same business and so they did. They opened a store in Belfast, Maine and called it Yo Mamma's Home. They spent five years filling it up with cool stuff and now they are having their sixth year and third location. If you asked one of them she might say it is colorful and messy and based in the idea that design makes for good objects and patterns and good stuff like that makes people happy. If you asked the other one she might say that the store is fun and filled with things that make people laugh and also things which are practical and beautiful and necessary for a happy life. Both would say that the store is a place for happy shopping.
Since we started the store we also have expanded our 'help-you' service to include many, many mammas and papas to help you get stuff done. We decided that to run a store and a cleaning business was too complicated so we turned the Help You Service into a referral collective of outstanding, competent, trust-worthy workers who all make the same wage and who work directly for you, the customer. We still have one central referral gate and that is in the store. We make up a very large and helpful circle of workers in the mid-coast area. The store is bold and gutsy and beautiful and tender and wanton and wily and cheeky and poised. We sell: stationery, baby things, wool area rugs, bamboo and natural grass rugs, jewelry, purses and bags of all kinds, suitcases, oil cloth, games, goofy stuff, vintage collectibles, table linens, storage bins, cards, lap-top sleeves, and a million other things that will tweak your imagination. We choose things that are surprising and cheerful. We listen to what YOU think we should get and we get it. We chase trends that amuse us and will likely intrigue you too!
We learned to trust those who know more than we do and so we hired them. We have a great team. Sandhya and Mallery are 'WE' the owners. In addition, we have Beverly, a jubilant performance, mask and movement artist and teacher; Lisa, a brilliant, accomplished visual artist who sniffs out the odd and unusual and delightful in all areas; Rachel, artist and photographer who quietly sees the absurdity of life and is quick as a wink at any task we give her; and Tran who is the queen of compassion and who keeps us efficient and soulful. They are more than our worker bees, they are our invaluable and beloved friends.
