Finding the right temperature

This varies from person to person. Some people, particularly older people, feel the cold, while others are not as sensitive to it. You may need to experiment a little with the temperature to see what suits you. If there are thermostats on your radiators, you can set these individually. You might want the living room and kitchen to be warmer than the bedroom so it’s not too hot that you can’t sleep. The average temperature that most people like is between 18ºC and 21ºC. If you turn down your thermostat by just one degree, you can save significantly on your heating bill.

When to set the timer

The average property takes 30 minutes to heat up once it’s switched on and another 30 minutes to cool down. If you get up at 7am and leave for work at 8am, you can set the timer to go on at 6:30am and off at 7:30am. You may want to programme in different times for the weekends.

If you have a combi boiler, the water is only heated when you turn on the tap. This doesn’t need programming, but if you have a hot water tank, you may want to set the timer. Again, this might require some experimenting. How long the hot water lasts could depend on how well the tank is insulated as well as how much water you house. You could try putting it on for an hour in the morning and again for an hour in the evening to see if that’s long enough.

Maintenance is essential
